Internet Banking with St George Using Linux Browsers

This page discusses whether or not the St George bank internet banking website currently works with Linux, together with any known work-arounds for problems. This page dates back to 2003, when St George was using different applets for Internet Explorer and Mozilla users, and continued energetically through 2004 when St George suddenly broke previously existing compatibility and left Linux users (and perhaps all Mozilla users) unable to use Internet banking for a time. It remains here as a reference in case there are future problems.

The author of this page is not affiliated with St George bank.

Current status at November 2006

New HTML site

The new St George Internet banking site that was launched in the second half of 2006 is written in HTML, and I don't know of any problems with Firefox in particular or Linux browsers in general. Users still need to make sure that they are not blocking popups from the stgeorge.com.au domains.

Luke Yelavich reports that the login screen of the new Internet banking site is not accessible to screen readers.

Old Java net banking site

This site is being phased out, and will be likely completely phased out by 2007. Most users (see an example) now report that the Java site works perfectly with Mozilla variants on Linux. These users largely seem to be using Sun's JDK 1.5.0.

For some other users, the remaining problem with the Java site using Mozilla on Linux seems to be that if you click 'Logon', you will be taken to a blank page at https://ibank.stgeorge.com.au/html/redirect.asp rather than a page which pops up the login dialog. An unarchived message to the SLUG list (see a followup though) pointed out that going directly to https://ibank.stgeorge.com.au/html/redirect.asp?bhjs=0 will pop up the login screen correctly. No User-Agent forgery seems to be needed.

Sonia Hamilton points out that Firefox users in particular need to make sure that popup blocking is off, or as Marek Wawrzyczny points out, that at least popups for stgeorge.com.au are allowed.
